A Moving Theater of Absolute Uniqueness
(or the aesthetic pleasure of pioneering creativity)
Curated by Y. E. Torres, A Moving Theater of Absolute Uniqueness one-night event at Frenetic Theater which seeks to encourage unconventional performance that is influenced by contemporary belly dance. The event intersects discipline-defying, breakthrough projects which challenge conventional ideas about movement, costume, installation and its application in performance. A Moving Theater of Absolute Uniqueness will serve as an outlet for experimentation by creating an environment for artistic growth and expanding public access to non-traditional dance in Houston, Texas.

I had several of my students ask me today whether I was going somewhere special after work because I looked nice. I also got a lot of compliments on my jacket, and a couple people asked me if I've lost some weight. I wasn't going anywhere except home after work, and I don't think I've lost weight, but I'm glad people liked the look. I was generally inspired by having gone to see Alice in Wonderland on Friday night. I wanted something that was a bit Victorian, and the jacket fit the bill.

One of the best parts of the Texas Renaissance Fair (TRF) is to watch Lord Randolph's chain mail fashion show held at his shop shortly after the Grand Parade - it is quite an experience! Randolph has volunteer models parading around in cool, intricate chain mail outfits - a photographer's delight! The fashion show is definitely for mature audiences since a lot of flesh is exposed. The only problem with the actual show is that it takes place on the second floor of the chain mail shop and fencing chains are an issue - bummer! After the actual fashion show the models come out to the front of the store and pose for photos. What a tough life it is shooting these models! I took this photo in November 2011. Can't wait until next year!

Model at the Fall 2011 Run to the Sun Fashion Show (IMG_3048.jpg)
Every year there is a Women's Show in Anchorge, Alaska - it's a cool event to attend, even as a guy. The Women's Show included various fashion shows - this photo shows clothing on sale at Run to the Sun - a local beachwear, swimsuit, outdoor clothing, and also a tanning salon. The models are very nice but the lighting at the arena is ugly and it gives me problems all the time. Please ignore the lighting and enjoy the models!
I took this photo in September 2011 at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska.

All dressed up (the first time in a long time) to go shopping...unsuccessfully. 20 shops and NOTHING. Didn't fit, looked bad, and/or too expensive. gwargh.
On me:
Butterfly hair clip - had it AGES ago from Sinma JB I believe, or some other cheapo Asian accessory shop
Necklace - present from relatives in the UK; box says Avon (the cosmetics?)
Bangles - ninja'd from my mum
White top - half of a salwhar khameez that was given to me as a gift from Bangladesh
Scarf - also from mum. it was very slippery so I used pins to make it stay. Bad idea because I was pulling my top off multiple times to try clothes. After the first time I removed the pins and just wrapped it around my neck.
Jeans and belt - JayJays, Brisbane (same as last time; couldn't find my other pair)
Shoes - Playboy (not the Hugh Hefner comp), Denmark. I LOVE Scandinavian shoes. SO COMFORTABLE and yet so good looking. If I could buy the entire Scandinavian shoe industry, I would.
Socks - from KL somewhere

The nicest women wash up on Alaskan beaches (IMG_2138a)

This was my second shoot with Astacia - and it was much nicer that than first - no drunks or gawking tourists to deal with, plus it was a smaller group and was very relaxed. Astacia is a lovely young woman to shoot with - very photogenic, funny as hell, and doesn't abuse the photographers too badly!
We did this shoot in Lynn Ary Park in West Anchorage in August 2011. Great evening for a shoot.
Strobist info - I used a 2 flash set-up; a Canon 580 EX II shot through a white umbrella, set at 1/2 power, and a a bare Vivitar 285HV at 1/4 power. I'm pretty pleased with the lighting during this shoot but still need to get better.

I was recently invited by my buddy, fashion photographer extraordinaire Jeremiah Wilson, to visit one his fashion shoots. He was shooting a campaign for Steve Madden shoes at Poly Prep in Brooklyn. I went down to pay Jeremiah a visit, and decided to shoot some photos of my own, and interview Jeremiah for one the publications I write for. I thought a 'behind the scenes' of a fashion shoot piece would be interesting to work on, and it turned out that way. I had a blast doing both. Some of mt photos came out great, but I was cheating. Jeremiah was the one who set up models, shots nd lighting. I just stood back and pressed the shutter. August 5, 2010, Bay Rideg Brooklyn. You can see more of Jeremiah's brilliant photography here: www.jeremiahwilsonphoto.com/

FAVE #850 Barbie blonde #8 Ponytail (1964-1965)
Newly arrived gal - Looks like she wore #1688 Travel Togethers from 1967 forever, and she had a big bow in her hair that looked factory (?!) that matched the outfit. At first I thought she might have been a dressed doll from a store display, but surely that's too big a gap in the years between the outfit and doll. I decided to remove the bow because the straight pin used to hold it in place was starting to rust and make a black dot on the doll's head. I also took out her original bottom hair band (that was really dried out) because she had so many stray hairs and because I didn't want it to fuse forever to the hair. I hope I didn't devalue her terribly, but I just couldn't stand to leave it alone.
*Update: I just checked an online reference that said that number 8's were produced through 1966...so now I'm thinking she might really have been a dressed doll wearing Travel Togethers. I know Mattel sometimes put old dolls into new outfits and sold them in their factory store or even at regular retail shops. But I don't get the red bow in her hair - which totally looked like it came from the factory that way and matched the outfit perfectly. Why go to the trouble if she wasn't a store display doll.....Mystery doll!
I've wanted a later ponytail with this coloring since 1993 - when I saw one on the cover of Barbie Bazaar. I didn't collect back then, but I always remembered that photo.
