The latest fashion trend for this Fall: more black

I've noticed that some Southern Monarch caterpillars turn darker at this time of the year, with more black than yellow on their bodies. Makes sense, since black will absorb more heat on days with few hours of sunlight. I wonder if the butterfly stage will be dark too, or just normal.
This caterpillar is eating a milkweed seed pod, a very good thing since it prevents milkweed plants from taking over the world. :P

Estuve viendo que algunas orugas de la especie local de mariposa monarca se ponen más oscuras en esta época del año, con más negro que amarillo en el cuerpo. Tiene sentido, porque el color negro absorbe más calor en días con pocas horas de luz solar. Me pregunto si la mariposa saldrá oscura también, o normal nomás.
Esta oruga está comiendo una cápsula de semillas de asclepia, algo muy bueno ya que de otra forma las asclepias cubrirían el mundo. :P
