Imitation being the most sincere way of cashing in on someone else’s original idea it was not long after the début of EC’s Mad, at that time a comic book, that others in the comic business did their best to cut themselves a slice of the action.

There were around a dozen or so of them, and none lasted more than 5 issues. Other more successful imitators would come along in the 60’s after Mad had become Mad Magazine, but from 1953 to 1954 we had these.

This Madhouse by the way is not the one that Archie would publish in the 70’s, this was Ajax’s 1953 bit of weirdness, the cat in the lower right hand corner was their continuing character like Mad’s Melvin (before he was named Alfred E. Newman in a contest in the magazine era.)

Flip, the one with the headless Zoot-Suiter, a fashion statement that at the time of Flip’s publication in 1954 was already hugely out of date, was from of all companies Harvey, the people who gave the world uppity bumpity adventures about Richie Rich, Casper and Little Dot, at that time however they had not yet gone over completely to the cute side of the Force

As a little kid, I spent hours sitting at the kitchen table pouring over the illustrations in this book. It was a graduation gift to my mom in the early '50's. I love "Better Homes and Gardens" cookbooks. Most of them have classic illustrations and fonts that perfectly mirror the design and fashion of the times. And the recipes are pretty good, too.
